A taste of the Caribbean in Kennesaw, GA

It’s been a more than a year since my last Eating Out post, and not for lack of eating out but I’m often forgetting to take a photo of the food before diving in. By the time I remember, half the food is usually gone and that just doesn’t make appealing imagery. But I remembered at our latest family dinner!

Make advance reservations

Since it was Valentine’s, I knew it would be crazy to get a table so I wanted to make a reservation ahead of time. Initially it would be just the two of us, but when I tried various restaurants on OpenTable (an app for dinner reservations) it was just plain impossible to find a table for two between 5:30 and 8 pm! And when I increased the number to a table for four, I could get any time at any restaurant. Afterwards I heard from a former waiter that restaurants do that: limit tables for two, because they can make more with larger groups! Makes sense, and that’s good to know.

Dining Caribbean on Valentine’s Day

We were in the mood for Caribbean food and Bahama Breeze in Kennesaw seemed like a good choice.
The lobby was crowded but since we had a reservation, the wait was less than five minutes before we happily followed the host to our booth. It was a more quiet section of the restaurant and they did a great job giving the restaurant a Caribbean/tropical feel with the décor. Even though we missed hearing Caribbean tunes, getting a table within a short time was worth it.

Huge menus were handed over with so many choices, I had a hard time deciding… But first a drink!
I selected a regular Mojito, but our waiter had other ideas and recommended a Coconut Mojito with coconut rum, pineapple juice and the regular Mojito ingredients. Although I was hesitant at first, I went for the suggestion and did not regret a sip. It was goooood! Thank you Francisco (our waiter), you have skills!

With our drinks we ordered the Firecracker shrimp appetizer that was so good, I forgot to take a picture. The shrimp had a crunchy coating and was served with sriracha aioli, a great combination!
Dinner choices were quickly made, except by me who needs to read all the ingredients and ask her gut first what it was in the mood for. As a result I picked the Calypso shrimp pasta, pressured by the fact that everyone had already given their order. (This is why I usually check a restaurant menu before I go out to eat.) Well, at least I remembered to take some pictures to share with you!

After a bit of a wait (it was Valentine’s Day after all), our plates arrived one by one. Blackened Fish with sweet potato puree and green beans for hubby, Jerk chicken with yuca-cheese croquettes, the Taste of Jamaica with pork and chicken for my sister, and like I said Calypso shrimp on pasta for me. Of course we had to try each other’s dishes and yum yum, it was ALL good!
I’ve been to Bahama Breeze many times and this time, like before we were not disappointed by the flavorful beverages and food! If you haven’t tried it yet and like tasty food, you are in for a treat!

My recommendation: Go for it!

There were only two things that could have been better: a shorter wait time for our food, although it’s understandable, and lack of music that adds to the ambiance. When we left, the speakers outside were blaring calypso music, but we didn’t hear a peep where we sat. So next time, I’ll be sure to ask for seats where the music is. Overall, it was a great experience though and we will definitely go back again!

As usual, this post reflects my personal experience and I was not paid in any way (money or free food) by the restaurant. I’m just sharing my honest opinion and hopes it helps you to explore other cuisines if you normally stay on the ‘safe’ side.
