A few months ago we embarked on a new adventure. In the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, my son Gabe and I co-founded a new business! Were we crazy to start a hot sauce business right now? You could say that, but so far Komodo Sauces has been taking off like you wouldn’t believe it!
A family recipe for hot sauce
Our hot sauces have always been popular at gatherings with friends and family so we decided, why not? Komodo Red and Komodo Black are new flavors in the hot sauce world. They are our versions of bami sambal (red habanero sauce) and sambal kecap (black soy sauce) as they are traditionally known in Suriname. We could only get these when family was visiting, but as visits were getting scarce the creative juices started flowing. What if… we could make the sauces ourselves?
It took several batches of trial and error, but we finally did it! We were ready to share and make the hot sauces more accessible to others. We don’t know what will happen in the future, but the favorable reactions and reviews we received so far really give us hope that this was a good decision.
Supporting a good cause
In addition, we are donating part of the sales to a charity that fights human trafficking. The perfect charity to support when you think about the fact that my grandmother was basically trafficked from Java, Indonesia. She was lured onto a Dutch ship loaded with indentured laborers, to work on the plantations in Suriname over 100 years ago, never to see her family again. Human trafficking and modern day slavery needs to be stopped and with our donations we are contributing a little to the cause.
